BANGALORE, NOV. 6. Small-scale industries in the State need to upgrade their technology and marketing skills to remain competitive in the market-led global economy and overcome financial difficulties, the Minister for Large- and Medium-scale Industries, P.G.R. Sindhia, has said. He was speaking at the inauguration of a research and training centre of Indo-German Institute of Technology (IGIT) on Saturday. Mr. Sindhia said small-scale industries, which exported products worth Rs. 24,000 crores and had about 25 lakh employees, needed to adopt the latest technology to deliver quality goods on time. If they adopted modern technologies, they could help secure Karnataka the top slot in exports. The State was now ranked second, he added. Germans, he said, were the world leaders in the automobile sector and had knowledge about traffic engineering. They could share their knowledge with Indian entrepreneurs. "The IGIT will also help future engineers and engineering faculty teachers," he said. The IGIT has been set up by the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) with the help of Diamant Metallplastic GmBH, Germany, and Diamant Triumph Metallplastic Pvt. Ltd., India, at the Vemana Institute of Technology in Koramangala. Achim Schulz, managing director of Diamant Metallplastic of Germany, said the institute envisaged better interaction and cooperation between universities and industries in Germany and their Indian counterparts in mechanical and materials engineering. It would have projects sponsored by the Indian and German governments and industries from both countries.
