CPI threatens campaign over price rise
By Our Special Correspondent
KOLKATA,
NOV. 6.
The Communist Party of India leader, Gurudas Dasgupta, today warned the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government that if it did not consider a rollback in the price of diesel and LPG,the CPI's labour arm, the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) would launch a campaign to counter the UPA's "anti-people" policies.
"We [the Left Parties] are supporting the UPA to keep the BJP out of office but it does not mean that we will accept any decision of the Manmohan Singh Government. We demand immediate rollback of prices of petro products," Mr. Dasgupta said.
Mr.Dasgupta, also the AITUC general-secretary, told the union members that he would meet the Centre of Indian Trade Unions' representatives in New Delhi on November 9 and the other trade unions the next day to chalk out the campaign.
"We are concerned as the hike would lead to galloping increase in prices of vegetables and bus fares which will hurt the average man," Mr.Dasgupta said.
