Khadi is the buzzword

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, NOV. 6. An unusual sight awaited visitors and the staff of the Secretariat who went to the `C' block on Saturday.

The Chief Secretary, Mohan Kanda, the Principal Secretary, Jannat Hussain, the CPRO, G. Valliswar, and their aides were found sporting crisp handloom shirts. The `Saturday syndrome' is a result of the collective decision of the officials to revive the ailing handloom sector.

This follows the suggestion made by the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on State Formation Day to people to wear handloom cloth at least one day in a week to revive the fortunes of the weavers. This has gone down well with the officialdom and the resultant change was witnessed today.

Surprised by the move, other staff demanded that an APCO sale point be set up in the block to make available handloom textiles.

Though there is a khadi outlet in the Secretariat, it is not much frequented. All this augurs well for APCO since visitors too are showing interest in handlooms.
