NEW DELHI, NOV. 6. The Leader of Opposition in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has alleged that the Congress-ruled civic body had miserably failed in providing free uniforms to students studying in the municipal primary schools. Even the purchase of desks for these institutions was yet to be completed even almost two years after the tender for the same was issued, he added. "Due to the inefficiency and slow process, desks have not been purchased so far and students are still awaiting the arrival of their uniforms. This lackadaisical attitude of the MCD functionaries would result in the lapse of annual funds allotted under education head,'' he said, adding that unfortunately, students belonging to the weaker sections of society had to suffer due to incompetence of the Corporation officials. According to Mr. Arya, last year the Corporation had failed to spend Rs.18 crores that was returned to the Government. This year, Rs.155 crores was available under the education head and it now seems that this money would also remain unspent due to which poor students would have to suffer, he alleged. He further said that in December last year, the Standing Committee as well as the Education Committee had passed the order for providing two sets of uniform to each students. But it was very unfortunate that it was only in the Standing Committee meeting held last month, an administrative approval was sought for this and that too for only one set of uniform. Tenders for the same were yet to be floated and nobody knows when the students would receive their uniform, he added.
