Factory guard fires in air

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, NOV. 6. A security guard of an automobile spare parts factory was arrested by the North-East Delhi police after he opened fire in the air while trying to prevent agitating labourers from getting inside the factory premises at Dilshad Garden in North-East Delhi today.

According to the police, more than 60 striking labourers had gathered outside Machino Industries in Dilshad Garden. They wanted to force their way into the factory premises.

Around 11 a.m., the labourers resorted to use of force in their bid to enter the factory premises. This led to a fight between them and the security guards deployed there. Soon, the situation went out of control as labourers and the guards grappled with each other. Amid the melee, one of the guards fired in air. No one was injured. But five labourers were injured in the fighting. The police were subsequently informed. The labourers were taken to hospital from where they were discharged after first aid.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the management and the labourers had been at loggerheads due to some dispute in the past couple of months. The dispute had almost been settled but the labourers, who were on strike, wanted to begin work today.
