HYDERABAD, NOV. 6. The State Government will extend the two-month relaxation by one more month, if necessary, on imposing fine on two-wheeler riders for not using helmets. This was informed by the Transport Minister, S. Santosh Reddy, on Saturday when complaints of harassment of two-wheeler owners by the police for not wearing helmets were brought to his notice. On the complaint of non-availability of helmets, Mr. Reddy assured that the police would not insist on headgear with ISI certification.
Traffic police warned
The Minister warned traffic police officials against harassing two-wheeler drivers for not wearing helmets. He admitted that the Government had received complaints of seizure of vehicles and use of foul language by police from drivers not following the norm. Meanwhile, the City Traffic Police counselled about 3,000 two-wheeler drivers on the third day of campaign on wearing helmets for personal safety.
Malls join campaign
The traffic police also designed awareness campaigns and shopping malls in the city - Central Mall, Lifestyle, Westside, MPM mall and One Store - would join them from Sunday in showing films on traffic and road safety. The "traffic commandos" from schools will distribute leaflets at these malls. For those watching the hour-long shows, there will be quiz and slogan writing contests one week later. Prizes will be awarded by the traffic police and mall authorities. There will be no counselling on Sunday though summons will be issued to those not wearing helmets in select places in the city. Counselling would be resumed from Monday, according to Additional Commissioner of Police, Traffic.
