Letters to the Editor
Sir, For those who have suffered the indignity of colonialism and suppression, Yasser Arafat is a symbol of resistance. He has held out against the continued occupation of his land and the oppression of his people. Israel's case is based on the myth of the Promised Land; the Palestinian position is based on the historical reality following the Sack of Jerusalem. The most appropriate tribute to Mr. Arafat would be the resumption of the peace process and the establishment of the Palestinian state. Jacob George, Changanasseri, Kerala Sir, For the Palestinian people, Mr. Arafat is a symbol of their struggle for statehood. The Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon's statement that he will not allow Mr. Arafat to be laid to rest in Jerusalem is unfortunate. Nalini Vijayaraghavan, Thiruvananthapuram
