Social engineering

Sir, — Most of the arguments in the article "Who is afraid of social engineering?" (Nov. 5) are relevant to the Indian context too. The Indian corporate sector has vehemently expressed reservations about voluntary quotas in the private sector.

The social justice argument is the outcome of recurring problems in government schools, which have been pushing the marginalised rural students into unemployment. Quality has been largely neglected in pursuit of expansion of education to all sections of society. Hence positive social engineering in the form of reservation is inevitable in India.
