Letters to the Editor
Sir, We have been hearing many criticising the concept of old age homes, saying it is a negative influence of the Western world. In the modern world, we have consciously and willingly accepted the Western way of life, including the industrial culture with its premium on children's education and employment of both husband and wife. Nobody will disagree with the ideal system where children look after their parents in their old age. But with none to keep company with the old and to tend to their needs, old age homes seem to be the only answer for middle class families. With the collapse of the joint family system, the old age home is the only refuge for childless couples and the unmarried. There is in fact need to encourage old age homes, especially the ones run on charity. P. Lalitha, Chennai
