AHMEDABAD, NOV. 7. Amit Bhandari claimed three wickets as Delhi restricted Gujarat to 214 on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy match at the Sardar Patel stadium at Motera, near here, on Sunday. In reply, Delhi was 49 for one at stumps in its first innings. Bhandari claimed three for 39, while Ashish Nehra chipped in with two. Electing to bat, Gujarat batsmen failed to perform, much to the disappointment of captain Mukund Parmar. Barring Nilesh Modi (42) and Timil Patel (38), no other Gujarat batsman could stay on wicket for long as the host lost wickets at regular intervals. Even wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel, making his Ranji Trophy debut after playing for India in 19 Tests, could manage just 27 runs before being caught by Mithun Manhas off Rahul Sanghvi.
Delhi started its innings on a confident note with two India players Akash Chopra and Gautam Gambhir leading the charge. Gambhirlooked aggressive from the beginning and cracked six boundaries in his unbeaten 33. But Chopra could not survive for long and was caught by Nilesh Modi off Timil for 19 runs.
