VIJAYAWADA, NOV. 7. "Another M. F. Hussain might be in the making in our city," said the Krishna District Collector, K. Prabhakara Reddy, seeking encouragement for young talent. Speaking at a meeting organised in connection with the prize-distribution to winners of The Hindu-Young World painting competition at the TTD Kalyana Mandapam auditorium here on Sunday, Mr. Reddy complimented the newspaper management for helping hone children's skills. "Catch them young is the buzzword. These competitions will not only bring to the fore their innate talent but also widen the horizons of their knowledge base," he said, calling on parents to utilise such platforms to ignite their wards' creative spark. The event had drawn tremendous response. Of the nearly 2,000 entries it received, over 300 names were shortlisted. Children from as far as Khammam, Jaggayyapet and Tadepalligudem, with their parents in toe, participated. The contest was in two categories -- senior and junior. Winners of both the groups were given first, second and third prizes in addition to seven consolation prizes.

In the juniors' group, G. Pallavi and B. Sireesha from Sri Kakatiya High School, Vijayawada, bagged the first and second prizes respectively while K. Sravani from Sri Siddhartha Buds and Blossoms School, Vijayawada, came third. In the seniors' category, Sri Pradeepthi from Kendriya Vidyalaya-1, Satyanarayanapuram in Vijayawada won the first prize, T. Narendra Kumar from Sri Krishnaveni Talent School, Vijayawada, bagged the second prize while the third position was secured by R. Vishnupriya from V. P.Siddhartha Public School, Vijayawada. The consolation prize winners in the juniors' category were Gowri Shankar of Kendriya Vidyalaya, ONGC, Rajahmundry, N. Swetha from Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan, Tadepalligudem, B. Balram from Navbharat Public School, Palvancha in Khammam, J. Shravani Durga from St. Luke's Public School, Guntur, T. Amrutha from N.S.M Public School, Vijayawada and V. Asha Deepthi from Sri Pujitha Public School, Jaggayyapet. In the senior group, T. Manavi from Nirmala High School, Vijayawada, M. Sridhar from Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan, Tadepalligudem, K. Harikiran from St. Luke's Public School, Guntur, G. Naga Gowri from Sri Pujitha Public School, Guntur, Gargi Talukdar from V. P. Siddhartha Public School, Vijayawada, P. Bhagyasri from Vidya Vikas English Medium School, Avanigadda and N.V. Naresh Babu from J.D.A.V. Public School, Jaggayyapet won consolation prizes. The assistant general manager of the Union Bank, A Sudhakar and the academic Director of Sri Kakatiya Educational Institutions, T.V. Reddy were the guests of honour. The Chief of Bureau, The Hindu , Vijayawada, A. Saye Sekhar, presided while the unit's Regional Manager, M. Krishna Kiran and the Assistant Regional Manager, circulation department, V.V. Raja Rao were also present. The Union Bank of India sponsored the Young World painting competition across the nation while Sri Kakatiya Educational Institutions is the regional sponsor of the event.
