CPI(M) for equal pay to teachers

BHOPAL, NOV. 7. The CPI(M) will exert pressure on the UPA Government at the Centre to bring in laws to ensure equal pay to teachers employed under different categories, the Polit Bureau member, Sitaram Yechury, said today.

At a rally of `shikshakarmis' here, he said their demand for employment under the State Education Department was "befitting." "The State Government is lying if it excuses itself from accepting these demands on basis of lack of funds."

`Shikshakarmis' are teachers employed under panchayats in Madhya Pradesh. They have been boycotting work under the banner of the Madhya Pradesh Shikshakarmi Sangh for the past two weeks demanding pay on par with teachers employed under the State Education Department, claiming that both have the same job profiles.

Alleging that it was a "conspiracy" by the BJP Government in the State, Mr. Yechury said: "By refusing the demands of teachers, communal forces, like the one ruling in this State, want backwardness to prevail." — PTI
