CBI to press for Monica's extradition
NEW DELHI,
NOV. 7.
The CBI today said it would press for the extradition of Monica Bedi, underworld don Abu Salem's girlfriend and Bollywood actress, from Portugal. She will have to face trial here for procuring a fake passport to flee the country. The agency would give an appropriate reply to the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, who, after receiving a letter from her seeking pardon, sent it to the CBI Director, CBI sources said here.
It was up to the Government to grant pardon to Monica, who had signed as Sana Kamal Malik to acquire the passport and used it to leave the country with Salem, fully aware of the consequences. She would be charged with forgery under the Indian Penal Code and various sections of the Passport Act for possession of a forged passport. But she would not be tried for any offence related to the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, the CBI said. UNI
