Relocate electric posts

Sir, - The roads in front of the Kerala State Library Council, the Bishop Pereira Hall in Nandavanam, and St. Joseph's High School in General Hospital Junction was widened months back. This portion cannot be fully utilised as the electric poles are not relocated yet. The authorities should take steps to relocate them immediately, as there is heavy traffic on these roads.

Karamana Manikantan Nayar,

List priorities

Sir, - The Trivandrum Rail Division is celebrating the Silver Jubilee of its formation and as per reports, the authorities are planning for more development. I request the authorities to finish the pending construction works on a priority basis. No passenger can reach even the first platform of the Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station without an umbrella during rainy season. Similarly no amenities have been provided at the newly constructed platform. Even after 25 years, the main platform at Chirayinkeezhu is maintained as a meter gauge level platform, may be for `archaeological reasons.' Provision for passenger amenities have been totally ignored at various stations while conversion and doubling works were done. Even though almost all express trains have more than 18 coaches, newly constructed platforms can accommodate only16 coaches affecting especially the lady passengers. Though trespassing is punishable offence, no overbridge is provided for passengers to move in between platforms. In 1967, there were five pairs of passenger trains with sufficient number of coaches running between Trivandrum and Quilon, which has now been reduced to three pairs running with a gap of seven hours and overcrowded. Of course, the number of long distance express trains has enormously increased but the railway has totally ignored local and daily commuters. Thus, while framing programmes for the next 25 years, let the Trivandrum Division provide basic amenities at the Thiruvananthapuram Central Station and other intermediate stations first.

N. Muraleedharan Nair,

Chirayinkeezhu.

Traffic regulation needed

Sir, - There are two accident-prone points in the city on the National Highway from Thiruvananthapuram to Kanyakumari - at Chenthittai Junction and the entry to the diversion lane to the Chalai Tamil Higher Secondary School at Choorakattu Palayam. At the Chenthitta Junction, there is always heavy traffic of both pedestrians and vehicles as the road leads to the railway station and to Government offices. On one side of the highway is the Valiachalai, with its Ganapathy and Mahadevar temples and on the other side of the highway, is the Chenthittai street, with its Devi temple attracting devotees on all days. For the people residing in the Chenthittai or Valiachalai street, attempting to cross the highway is very difficult. There is no traffic control at the junction. For pedestrians and vehicles getting out of the street at this point sometimes take 15 to 20 minutes. Traffic assistants should be posted on duty at these two places, at least between 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., 12 noon to 2 p.m. and from 3.30 p.m. to 7 p.m. to help pedestrians. Road marks indicating pedestrian-crossing should be made at these places. Speed-breakers should be constructed near these pedestrian crossings. If possible traffic signals should be installed at these places. Some sort of traffic diversion should also be considered. Do not allow autorickshaws to park at the end of the Valiachalai Street, at the entry to the highway, blocking movement of other vehicles.

S. Krishnaswamy,

Valiachalai Street.
