Police foil Janashakti meet

By Our Staff Reporter

KARIMNAGAR, NOV. 7. Police here on Sunday foiled the Janashakti group's martyrs memorial meeting. The naxalite outfit had earlier secured permission from the High Court for organising the meeting on the outskirts of the town between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

The town was literally taken over by the police and a curfew-like situation prevailed following imposition of Section 144. They also undertook cordon and search operations.

Tension runs high

Police pickets were posted at all important places.

Police also took all measures to ensure that no sympathiser or villager attended the meeting from the interior villages of Vemulawada, Sircilla, Yellareddypet, Kodimial, Chandurthi, Mustabad, Boinpalli, Bejjanki and other mandals by conducting vehicle checks well beyond town limits.

Tension gripped the town with the police intensifying their mobile patrolling to deny entry to naxalite leaders. And, when the Janashakti district committee member, Manganna, and a few others arrived at a function hall, police rushed to the spot and enquired about the permission.

Police clarified that the court had given permission to organise the meeting only on the outskirts and asked the leaders to leave the town immediately as Section 144 was in force.

Some women supporters travelling in five autorickshaws from Jagtial to Karimnagar were stopped by the police at Rekurthi village on the outskirts and asked to go back.

The Janashakti official spokesperson, Chandranna, who was coming from Hyderabad, was also stopped by the police at Alugunur village near here.

Talking to newsmen later, he alleged that the police were trying to disturb the peace process and warned that such actions would have an impact on the second round of talks with the Government.
