PUDUKOTTAI, NOV. 8. The State Government has taken steps to construct buildings to house the hostels for Adi Dravida students during this year, the Minister for Adi Dravida Welfare, C. Karuppusamy, has said. Inaugurating an upgraded middle school, run by the Adi Dravida Welfare Department, at Meyyappa Goundanpatti in Annavasal union today, he said 520 of the 1,076 Adi Dravida students' hostels were functioning from rented buildings. New buildings were under construction for 416 hostels. Buildings would be constructed for the rest of the hostels this year. The allocation for the monthly mess bill for the hostel inmates had been increased from Rs. 225 to Rs. 300. Mr. Karuppusamy said the Government had earmarked Rs. 8 crores for procuring land for providing free house sites to the Adi Dravidas. He said the newly upgraded middle school was started as a primary school in 1951. Efforts would be made for constructing new buildings for this school, he added. The Collector, Jatindranath Swain, presided over the function. The Fisheries Minister, M. Radhakrishnan, the Tamil Nadu Adi Dravida Housing Development Corporation (TAHDCO) chairperson, Saroja, and the district panchayat chairperson, Vanishri Kumararaja, spoke.
