`Democracy active only in Commonwealth countries'

BANGALORE, NOV. 8. Parliamentary democracy is active in letter and spirit only in Commonwealth countries, the Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, has said.

He was speaking after releasing the book, `Constitution for 21st Century India,' authored by Kambhampati S. Shastry, here today.

Tracing the history of the Indian Constitution, he said that the essence, such as sense of history, vision for the future, philosophical outlook, broad-based principles, and the binding and intrinsic value system enshrined in it, reflected the dedication and sacrifice of selfless and learned minds involved in compiling it.

However, there had been a demand to bring in some changes to it, he said.

Suggestions

Speaking on the book Mr. Shastry said that he had attempted to make some vital suggestions for improving the Constitution in the larger interests of the people.

The former Director of Administrative College of India Dharani P. Sinha was the chief guest.

The Director of the Institute of Chartered and Financial Accountants of India (ICFAI) Business School, T.R. Venkatesh, welcomed the gathering.

The publishers of the book, he ICAFI University, claimed that "... The book draws attention to the historical and cultural context in which the political and economic institutions that have borrowed from the West evolved over time, so as to examine their relevance to the Indian conditions."
