NEW DELHI, NOV. 8. Two-time Asian powerlifting champion and former junior National champion in hammer throw, Bharat Bhushan, died here on Sunday after a prolonged illness. He was 55. The cremation took place at the Punjabi Bagh cremation ground here on Monday. Starting his career as a hammer thrower, Bhushan held the under-19 National and school games record in the event and was a runner-up in the senior National as well. He later switched to powerlifting and helped popularise the sport in the Capital as well as the country. He won the Asian titles in 1984 and 1988. Popular in the powerlifting and athletics circles in Delhi, Bhushan was a vice president of the Indian Powerlifting Federation and joint secretary of the Delhi Olympic Association. The `Uthala' ceremony will be held at the Arya Samaj Mandir, Punjabi Bagh Extension, from 3.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m. on Tuesday.
