AIDWA alleges pressure on self-help groups
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI,
NOV. 8.
The All-India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) has alleged that "covert attempts are on to convert the women self-help groups (SHGs) into puppets of the ruling party by forcing them to rally under the Tamil Nadu Women's Development Corporation."
The State executive of the AIDWA, which met here on Sunday, adopted a resolution urging the Government to train all the SHGs and link them to banks as per norms laid down by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development. It decided to launch a State-wide agitation in support of the demand.
Muslim views sought
The meeting also decided to hold a special meeting to elicit views of Muslim women on the "Model Nikha Nama" announced by the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board.
The association would launch a concerted campaign to ensure allocation of 40 per cent jobs for women in the new food-for-work programme.
A resolution condemned the alleged threat issued to the assistant secretary of the AIDWA, Balabarathi, MLA. The association also decided to stage a demonstration in Chennai on November 13 demanding action against the accused in the case.
