CHENNAI, NOV.8. The Association of University Teachers (AUT)-Tamil Nadu has expressed serious reservations over the formation of a State-level committee to encourage colleges and universities to go in for quality assessment and accreditation. The committee, headed by the Education Minister, has officials, Vice-Chancellors and representatives of college managements. Noting that the committee did not have teacher representatives, the AUT-TN general secretary, P. Jayagandhi, said the present formation looked truncated as no quality assurance could come in higher education without involving the teachers. Only teacher representatives could focus on areas that require quality improvements or bring in positive reforms, as also address academic issues in a non-partisan manner. The AUT-TN also expressed shock over the decision of the Madras University to announce a `tatkal' scheme for issuing certificates to compensate for revenue losses. It was the basic duty of the university to issue certificates as requested by students efficiently and quickly. (The Madras University Vice-Chancellor had stated that the university had lost revenue as it lost over 50 arts and science colleges and more number of engineering colleges in the last three years.) The Association urged the university to redesign its systems and procedures in office "rather than fleecing hapless students."
