Storage up in reservoirs

COIMBATORE, NOV. 8. The torrential rain, that has been lashing the district for the past eight days, has brought the storage in a number of reservoirs to the brim, despite a reasonable quantum of discharge for irrigation.

The storage in various reservoirs in ft as follows: Sholayar 144, Parambikulam 62.25, Aliyar 108.80, Thirumurthy 52.25, Amaravathy 87.64.

As there is heavy rain in the catchments of the Parambikulam-Aliyar Project (PAP) in Western Ghats and in Kerala, the inflow into the reservoirs is said to be steadily increasing. At present, water is being released from Thirumurthy and Amaravathy reservoirs for irrigating 1.54 lakh acres in Coimbatore, Erode and Karur.

As far as the reservoirs supplying drinking water to the city and major areas of Coimbatore district are concerned, Pilloor was surplussing at 210 mts and Siruvani 878.52 mts (as against the full capacity of 878.5 mts above mean sea level).

The PWD has slowed down the discharge following requests from the farmers. But a reasonable quantum of water is being discharged for the tail-end ayacut areas.

The rainfall recorded at 8.30 a.m. today (in mm): Palladam 20, Sholayar 1, Parambikulam 3, Thoonakadavu 8, Peruvaripallam 13, Aliyar 2, Thirumurthy 2, Amaravathy 20, Upper Nirar 13, Upper Aliyar 20, Makkinampatti 1, Manakkadavu 1, Sircarpathy 12, Agricultural University 43.6, Airport 27, Annur 10, Avanashi 27, Mettuppalayam 24, Tirupur 42.3, Sulur 44.6, Pollachi 1, Siruvani catchment 10 and Siruvani foothills 14.

Cracker sale hit

The rain has, however, affected the sale of crackers. According to the cracker merchants, only a subsiding intensity of rain could bring respite for them.
