ERODE, NOV. 9. The AIADMK members staged a demonstration here today in protest against the hike in the prices of diesel, petrol and LPG gas cylinders by the Union Government. As many as 500 men and women demonstrated in front of the Head Post Office disrupting the traffic on the busy Gandhji Road for nearly two hours. The party's Headquarters Secretary and former Transport Minister, K. A. Sengottiyaan, led the demo.
Woman injured
The AIADMK volunteers brought LPG cylinders to the demonstration and a cylinder with gas was placed over the lorry, in which K.A. Sengottiyan, the Rajya Sabha MP, N.R. Govindarajar, the MLAs, K.S. Thennarasu, K.C. Palanisamy, S.S. Ramanidharan, K.R. Kandasamy, Selvi Murugesan, the SIDCO Chairman, `Sindu' Ravichandran, the Chairman of Erode District Panchayat Council, V.K. Chinnasamy, the former Minister, Eswaramurthy and others were standing. They were shouting slogans urging the Centre to withdraw the price hike immediately. Suddenly the cylinder fell down in which party woman wing member Mallika of Veerappanchatram, sustained head injury. She was admitted to a private hospital. Meanwhile, the joint meeting of the CPI and the CPM held here last night resolved to stage rail roko in Erode, Engure, Kodumudi and Uthukuli railway stations on November 14, urging the Centre to withdraw the price hike. Our Dharmapuri Staff Reporter writes The Municipal Chairman, S.R. Vetrivel and other local leaders led the AIADMK demonstration in front of the District Head Post Office here today. Our Salem Special Correspondent writes Hundreds of AIADMK activists staged a demonstration near the Head Post Office near Old Bus Stand here today. Earlier, they marched in a procession from the Anna Statue, led by the party's organising secretary, Liaquat Ali Khan. They raised slogans against the Centre. Salem Mayor, R. Sureshkumar, former MPs, MLAs and other frontline office-bearers of the party's district units participated in the agitation.
