KOLKATA, NOV. 9. Surya Sekhar Ganguly showed enough resolve to remain the sole Indian among the leaders as rest of his compatriots faltered in the second round of the Alekhine Chess Club-organised International Open chess meet at the Gorky Sadan here on Tuesday. Ganguly joins Dao Thien Hai of Vietnam, Oleg Romanishin of Ukraine and Alexander Fominyh of Russia for a four-way lead with two points each. On the top board, Dao Thien Hai, playing black, did well with Sicilian Defence to upset the rhythm of the Tejas Bakre and eventually beat the latter in 36 moves. In the third board, Ganguly once again accomplished a technically perfect game to make short work of compatriot Saptarshi Roy in a queen's pawn game. Sandipan Chanda could not sustain a winning start and was held to a draw by Dinesh Kumar Sharma in 23 moves in Queen's pawn opening. The lone WGM, Nisha Mohota, played a second consecutive draw. Top-seeded Aleksej Alexandrov of Belarus faced little difficulty against Aminul Islam of Bangladesh and ensured his win in 25 moves in Nimzo Indian defence. Alexandrov now has 1.5 points to his credit from 2 rounds.
