Follow Kerala model

Follow Kerala model

Sir, — The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has quashed the circular, directing Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation supervisors to collect, at least 60 to 90 per cent of empty bottles. ( The Hindu , November 5).

In Kerala, 200 ml of beer is sold at Rs.19. When the bottle is returned, Rs.3 is refunded. Will the TASMAC follow the Kerala example?

G. Purushothaman,

Tirunelveli.

Free cheque books

Sir, — Except the Indian Overseas Bank, all other banks issue chequebooks free of cost to their customers. The IOB charge Rs. 50 for a chequebook. ING Vysya Bank issues even demand draft free of cost. Hence, the IOB should issue free chequebooks.

R. Gopalakrishnan,

Madurai.

Dig ponds

Sir, — There is plenty of water now, thanks to the continuous rain that has lashed the country. However, the rainwater goes waste, draining into the sea. Hence, the Government should draw up plans to dig ponds, both big and small, to save the rainwater.

Sivagiri Sithan,

Uthamapalayam.

Rope car project

Sir, — The rope car project, launched recently by the Chief Minister, is a boon to the residents of Palani, especially the aged and the handicapped. Kudos to the Government!

M.S. Sankaran,

Palani.

Rash driving

Sir, — In the recent past, the number of road accidents in Tirunelveli has increased, mainly owing to the poor road conditions and the reckless driving of private bus drivers. Many roads in the city, dug for the underground drainage, have turned slushy.

As this is a festival season, private buses run at break-neck speed, especially during the rush hour, posing a threat to road-users. Will the authorities concerned take action against them?

V. Katnthimathynathan,

Tiruneveli.

Close them properly

Sir, — Private telephone companies often dug roads in Madurai for laying cables. In the past month, a company laid cables, but did not close trenches properly. Since the roads are dug on sides,

after rain, the roadsides become deep and unusable. Sometime during rain when heavy vehicles are parked on sides, lorries get stuck on improperly filled roads.

Hence, I request the authorities concerned not to allow telephone companies or any other agency to dig roads, at least during the monsoon season.

Muralilal Goenka,

Madurai.

Inland letters

Sir, — Unlike the new model, the old-type inland letters were convenient to handle and had more writing space. Hence, the Postal Department should restore the old type of inland letters.

M.S. Raghavan,

Madurai.

Tirunelveli.
