Building collapse toll up to 8

AHMEDABAD, NOV. 9. The toll in the collapse of a building being built for The Times of India printing press has risen to eight. Twentysix persons have been injured, a few of them seriously.

The extension building collapsed on Monday night. Police said 34 persons were trapped under the debris and rescue operations continued till about 10 a.m. today.

While 26 persons could be rescued alive, some of them with minor wounds, police and fire brigade personnel extricated eight bodies from the debris. All the deceased and injured were workers of the contractor and most of them hail either from the Panchamahals district in central Gujarat or from Orissa.

The contractor, Sharad Constructions Private Limited, announced a compensation of Rs. 2 lakhs each to the family members of those killed and Rs. 50,000 each to the injured.
