Monica Bedi seeks Presidential pardon

NEW DELHI, NOV. 9. The underworld don, Abu Salem's girl friend, Monica Bedi, facing an extradition from Portugal to India, has written to the President, A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, seeking his pardon and cancellation of criminal proceedings against her initiated by the CBI. She pleaded for a "second chance."

The handwritten letter, received by the President's Secretariat recently, sought pardon for forging a passport at Hyderabad.

In judicial custody

Ms. Bedi, who completed her two-year sentence in Portugal on September 17 this year and continues to be judicial custody pending the extradition case, stated that she regretted her mistake. She was scared to return as that would not enable to see her parents settled in Norway. The President's spokesman, S. M. Khan, confirmed receipt of the letter and said that it had been sent to the Home Secretary and Foreign Secretary ``for action as may deem appropriate.''
