CHITRADURGA, NOV. 9. A.V. Umapathy, Holalkere MLA, has promised to lead a delegation to urge the Chief Minister to include the Golla (Yadava) community under Scheduled Tribes. He was felicitated by the District Yadava Sangha here on Monday. Mr. Umapathy felt that the reservation was needed for the betterment of the backward Golla community in the State. According to him, there are as many as 50 lakh people belonging to the community in the State. He expressed the hope that the problems of the backward community would be solved, as the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister could empathise with them as they belonged to backward classes themselves. Special facilities were provided to students of the community when S. Bangarappa was the Chief Minister, he said. He also said that the present coalition Government should come forward to help the students of the community by offering scholarships and hostel facilities. The number of castes, which are declared as backward in the reservation list, had become too many and deserving communities were being deprived of several benefits, Mr. Umapathy added. Y. Katappa, president of the DYS, said that the people from the Golla community should work hard to progress and education was the only tool for doing so. The former president of the Chitradurga Zilla Panchayat B. Balaraj and the chairman of the Standing Committee on Health and Education, H. Hanumanthappa, spoke.
Felicitated
The national-level Kho Kho player Siddaraju was felicitated. C.T. Krishnamurthy, N.R. Laxmikanth, H. Manjunath, R. Ramappa, Parameshwarappa, Govindaraju, and Guddada Rangaiah, prominent members of the community in the district, participated in the function.
