Kaluwitharana retires

COLOMBO, NOV. 9. Hard-hitting Sri Lankan batsman and wicketkeeper Romesh Kaluwitharana announced his retirement on Tuesday, ending a nearly 14-year career in international cricket.

``It was my duty to bring fame to my country by playing to the best of my ability. However, I am more willing to support the game of cricket through the experience I have gained in any other capacity,'' Kaluwitharana said in a statement.

He played 49 Test matches scoring 1,933 runs at an average of 26. His 132 not out on debut remains his best score in Tests and among his three centuries.

As one of the finest Sri Lankan wicketkeepers, Kaluwitharana effected 119 dismissals in Tests and 207 in one-dayers. He also played 189 ODIs scoring 3,711 runs including two centuries. — AP
