Sheila lays stress on rural development

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, NOV. 9. The Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, today called for a comprehensive plan of action for the development of rural areas of Delhi. At the same time, she urged the officials to work out schemes that are able to generate employment opportunities among the youth and also promote self-employment.

Speaking at the first meeting of the reconstituted Rural Development Board, the Chief Minister asked the Board to identify the common problems being faced by the rural areas and then try and work out a plan for implementation. It was the first Board meeting for the newly nominated Chairman, Sajjan Kumar. Also present in the meeting was the Food and Supplies Minister, Raj Kumar Chauhan, Industry Minister, Mangat Ram Singhal, and a large number of MLAs. It was pointed out that lack of sewerage and diminishing employment opportunities in rural areas were the most common problems.

The Chief Minister asked the Irrigation and Flood Control Department and the Delhi Jal Board to draw up a comprehensive plan for putting in place an effective sewerage system in the identified areas and assured that funds would not be a problem at all. She suggested that small shops for allotment to youth from weaker section of society be set up on Gram Sabha land in such areas. This would go a long way in addressing the problem of unemployment.

Regarding the problem of shrinking water bodies in these areas, the Chief Minister ordered that an elaborate plan for their rehabilitation be drawn up at the earliest. On the issue of lack of maternity hospitals and homes in the rural areas, the Chief Minister directed the Development Commissioner, G.K. Marwah, to explore the possibility of setting up small maternity centres with beds on the basis of population in identified areas.
