Children's carnival inaugurated

NEW DELHI NOV. 9. The Delhi Lieutenant-Governor, B.L. Joshi, today said that education was not just about making people more literate but also about character building and understanding. Addressing students of Delhi Public School at R.K. Puram here after inaugurating a two-day annual "Children's Carnival 2004'', Mr. Joshi said young minds should also following the principle of "Each One, Teach One'' so that total literacy in the country becomes a reality.

Senior Congress leader and president of the DPS Society, Salman Khurshid, said the school was educating children from weaker sections of society in its "Anubhav Shiksha Kendra.'' The Principal, Shayama Chona, said the school had awarded nearly 450 scholarships to the underprivileged children, offering them a chance to compete with other children.

Yoga camp organised

NEW DELHI NOV. 9. A yoga camp was organised at Vikaspuri here on Sunday by the Yog Evam Manav Sewa Sansthan in association with a leading Hindi national daily.

The former Union Minister, Sahib Singh Verma, who was the chief guest on the occasion, stressed the importance of yoga in today's busy and stressful life. Swami Dharmanand of the Adhyatmik Sadhna Kendra in Chattarpur and Yogacharya Rajbir Tyagi talked about the potential of yoga in preventing heart ailments and degenerative diseases like cancer. The Sansthan also distributed winter uniforms to around 500 slum children studying in government schools.

New chief for Rail Vikas Nigam

NEW DELHI NOV. 9. Jagdish Prasad Shukla, an officer of the Indian Railway Service of Engineering, has taken over as the first Managing Director of the Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. (RVNL) that has been set up as "Special Purpose Vehicle" to undertake project development, mobilisation of financial resources and implement projects to strengthen Railway's golden quadrilateral and port connectivity projects.

An engineering graduate from the erstwhile University of Roorkee, Mr. Shukla has been serving Indian Railways for the past 33 years and has held several prestigious positions including Principal Chief Engineer (Northern Railway), and Chief Engineer (Construction) of the Jammu-Udhampur New Rail Line Project.

Prayas foundation day

NEW DELHI NOV. 9. To mark its foundation day, Prayas -- a non-government organisation -- organised several programmes to celebrate "Juvenile Rights Week" at Prayas Observation Home here this past week. These included cultural programmes, competitions, quiz and speech contests.

According to a Prayas release, the India Book House gave Amar Chitra Katha and Tinkle comics to juveniles a week before so that they could adequately prepare themselves for the quiz. The Prayas educators selected 35 contestants from 107 juveniles through the preliminary quiz round.

All seven sadans of Prayas -- including Gandhi Sadan, Nehru Sadan, Bhagat Sadan, Maulana Azad Sadan, Patel Sadan and Tilak Sadan -- participated in the quiz.

The winners were given Amar Chitra Katha books, Tinkle comics and educational kit.
