Vijayawada
By Our Staff Reporter
VIJAYAWADA, NOV. 9. The Krishna District Collector, K. Prabhakara Reddy, has proposed constitution of a joint committee by the Police, and Revenue Departments and all other allied wings to work out modalities for speedy disposal of cases pending in the court of law, through counselling. Speaking at a meeting organised in connection with a mega lok adalat conducted on the premises of the civil courts here to mark the Legal Literacy Day on Tuesday, Mr. Reddy said lok adalats did the dual duties of speedy disposal of litigations and clipping the wings of the `mediators'. Stating that the judiciary was a key wing of democracy, he said though not intentionally, justice was often delayed due to the increasing number of cases piling up in courts. Mr. Reddy hailed the decision of the Bar Association to solve 1,200 litigations through counselling at the mega Lok Adalat.
Petty disputes
The City Police Commissioner, Umesh Sharraf, emphasized the need for a redressal mechanism for petty disputes. "Not everybody can afford to run around courts for years seeking solution to petty disputes. We need to have a mechanism to ensure speedy disposal of these cases which could provide a great relief to the litigants," he pointed out. Stating that the Police Commissionerate had solved a number of disputes in the past couple of weeks through counselling, Mr. Sharraf endorsed the Collector's proposal for a joint committee for quick redressal of cases. He, however, suggested that since there were cases pertaining to land disputes in the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation limits, the VMC should also be made a party to the counselling group.
Help promised
Reacting to a plea by the president of the Bezawada Bar Association, Rameshchandra Babu, the Collector assured all possible help from the district administration to ensure prompt disposal of cases.
The Vijayawada Guntur Tenali Mangalagiri-Urban Development Authority's vice-chairman, V. N.Vishnu, suggested publication of a booklet to spread awareness among people with regard to legal litigations.
The Krishna district Sub-Collector, M. Jyothi Buddha Prakash and the metropolitan sessions judge, B. Siva Shankar Rao, were also present.
