Keep it clean

Sir, — The Mahamaham tank at Kumbakonam is not maintained properly, though pilgrims from all over the country visit it.

The authorities concerned do not recycle the water, nor do they clean the tank regularly.

As there is no proper security, the tank has become a den of anti-socials. The Public Works Department, the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment and the municipality should properly maintain the tank.

R. Jayasankar,

Kumbakonam.

Road repairs

Sir, — The accident, in which an LPG lorry overturned at Sengipatti on Tiruchi-Thanjavur National Highway, while trying to avoid a pothole, should be an eye-opener to the National Highways Department. There are many such dangerous spots, made worse by the recent rain.

The Highways Department should take up repair works now and then to prevent such accidents.

R. J. B. Frederick,

Thanjavur.

Underground dams

Sir, — After three years of dry spell, the Cauvery delta received copious rain this year. The rainwater has inundated paddy fields, dealing a blow to farmers. Four hundred tmcft of water has been allowed to drain into the sea from the delta areas. What a colossal waste!

This is mainly owing to the absence of any system to save floodwater. Hence, the Government should think of constructing underground dams in the Cauvery delta districts.

Each should have a capacity of five tmcft. The cost may be high, but the benefits will be huge.

Ansar,

Tiruchi.

Arm-twisting tactics

Sir, — Banks adopt arm-twisting methods for recovering loans from poor farmers.

It is high time that the Reserve Bank of India directed banks to publish the names of all defaulters, regardless of their status, and freeze their property.

H. Ghouse Baig,

Tiruchi.

Toilets needed

Sir, — At the TVS tollgate on Tiruchi-Thanjavur Road, residents, especially students, board moffusil and town buses.

The whole area reeks of stench, as some spoil the walls of the State Transport Corporation depot compound and other open space at night.

This poses a health hazard to the people.

The area has more floating population, but does not have any public conveniences.

Will the Corporation construct a pay-and-use toilet in the area?

G. Muthukrishnan,

Tiruchi.

No response

Sir, — The district administration has set up a flood control room ( The Hindu , October 10). It asked the people to contact the control room in case of emergency.

The Shanmuganagar west extension (Uyyakondan thirumalai) is a flood-prone area. An irrigation canal breached because of the heavy rain, and the floodwater entered this residential area recently, marooning 10 houses on the Fifth Cross Street. On Friday, I contacted the flood control room functioning at the Collectorate and the Corporation. I was told that action would be taken soon. But no action has been taken so far.

S. Sundararajan,

Tiruchi.

Generic, not trade names

Sir, — The Tamil Nadu Medical Council has made it mandatory for physicians and medical practitioners to prescribe drugs with generic names, and not with their trade names.

As doctors prescribe medicines with only trade names, patients are forced to buy drugs only from shops the doctors suggest. When such outlets run out of stock, the patients have to run from shop to shop to get the medicines.

On the other hand, if the generic name is also mentioned, the patients can purchase alternative medicines in case of any urgency, and get the concurrence of doctors later.

A. L. Narayanan,

Thiruverumbur,

Tiruchi.
