CHENNAI, NOV. 9. For six-year-old Raj, an inmate of the Guild of Service Home for the Handicapped in Anna Nagar, it was a memorable day when he received a prize from the Social Welfare Minister, Vijayalakshmi Palanisamy. Raj, who has arms only up to the elbow, was chosen for the prize for his sketch of a peacock. More than a dozen handicapped children received prizes after participating in various competitions organised by the Tamil Nadu Social Welfare Board. Children from various Government-aided and private orphanages and from schools for special children took part in events that included fancy dress, painting, singing, healthy baby contest and clay modelling. The Department also presented a rolling trophy to the organisation that won the maximum number of competitions. The programmes and prizes were funded with donations from philanthropists. Neither the State nor the Central Government provided any grants for the programme, said C.R. Saraswathi, Chairperson, Tamil Social Welfare Board.
