Kishan gang members nabbed

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, NOV. 9. Four persons, including a Judoka, allegedly owing allegiance to dreaded criminal Kishan Pehalwan, were arrested following an encounter with the Special Cell of the Delhi police from the Mangolpuri Industrial Area in North-West Delhi on Monday. Police claim to have recovered a hand grenade, a Chinese pistol, a double-barrel gun and two country-made pistols from their possession.

According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell), Ashok Chand, a team led by Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma received a tip-off that some members of the Kishan Pehalwan gang would come to the Mangolpuri Industrial Area in a Santro car to extort money from a businessman.

Subsequently the team laid a trap in the area and on noticing the vehicle tried to intercept it. Spotting the policemen, those moving in that vehicle allegedly opened fire at them. However, the police managed to overpower all four. The accused were identified as Deepak, Bijender Singh, Rajesh Kumar and Bijender. The police recovered 16 live cartridges along with four firearms from their possession.

During interrogation, the accused revealed that they belonged to Kishan Pehalwan gang. The main accused, Deepak, disclosed that in 1996, he had participated in the national games at Hyderabad in the Judo tournament. Lured by the prospect of making quick money, he got initiated into criminal activities.

In 1998, he was arrested under the Excise Act at Rohtak and then for planning a dacoity at Jhahhar. Two years ago, he along with his accomplices allegedly gunned down his rival, Bunty at Bahadurgarh. The same year, Deepak attempted to kill a school owner at Rohtak in a bid to extort money from him.

After a while, he along with his accomplices killed another person, Sunder Singh, at Rohtak, following a monetary dispute with him. Subsequently, Deepak was arrested and after being released on bail in 2003, he joined Kishan Pehalwan gang and facilitated the escape of a key gang member, Jagpal, from police custody from Rohtak Medical College.

Earlier this year, Deepak and his accomplices killed a resident of Bhiwani following an altercation with him over some trivial matter.

The police said Deepak's accomplice, Rajesh, earlier worked as a driver in the Border Security Force (BSF) till 1998. He left his job to begin farming at his native place but in the process came in contact with the Kishan Pehalwan gang members and joined them. In May 2001, he along with other gang members murdered a person and injured two others before robbing them of an Armada Jeep at Gohana in Haryana. They robbed another person of a Maruti Zen in 2002 and the next year gunned down Kishan's rival, Anoop. His other suspected involvements are being probed.
