An autorickshaw on show

By P. Sunderarajan

LONDON, NOV. 10. A humble autorickshaw, a full-scale version complete with an Indian registration number, is one of the attractions at the Science Museum here, placed right at the entrance to the second floor.

It is on display as an instance of energy efficiency. A plaque placed before the gleaming yellow-and-black vehicle explains: "It has only a 145 cc two stroke engine. But can still manage 68 miles per gallon even when carrying a driver and three passengers."

Set up in 1857, the London Science Museum is one of the oldest and largest in the world covering most disciplines of science. The collections here date back to the 18th century. A significant feature is that it has a team to keep a tab on scientific and technological developments. A section titled `Antenna' is earmarked for the display of latest developments. The museum has three lakh exhibits. It is run by the Government, but leading companies in the private sector fund and assist it.
