India & World
By Hasan Suroor
LONDON, NOV. 10. The wildlife photographer Harshad C. Patel will exhibit his work at a charity event here this week to raise awareness about the threat facing Indian wildlife. "There is a great threat to... India's wildlife. Through science, conservation, research, education and community awareness we can protect our animals from poaching pressures and an over-used habitat," he said. A selection of photographs from his book on Indian and African wildlife will be on show at the Conservation Ball. Mr. Patel, 35, expressed concern at the dwindling population of rare species such as the Asiatic lion and the snow leopard and said: "Something must be done to tackle this heartbreaking crisis." A spokesperson for the Vanishing Herds Foundation, which is organising the event, said that the proceeds would go towards funding an educational centre it planned to set up in Gir in India to educate and train students in wildlife protection.
