It was an interesting experience for the first-year students of Mookambigai College of Engineering, Kalamavur near Pudukottai, when they learnt the various aspects of yoga at the `yoga and health programme', conducted by the yoga club of the college recently. T. R. Ganapathy, of the Department of Chemistry, conducted a demonstration and explained the benefits of yoga. `Bhujangasanam', `padhahasthasanam', `vajrasanam' `dhanurasanam', `halasanam' and `suryanamaskaram', he said, would tone up the faculties of the body and strengthen the cerebral power. The chief executive of the college, A. Subramanian, said yoga helped one lead a disease-free life. The registrar of the college, M. Shekar, said the club was started six years ago. Students who practised yoga not only improved their academic performance but also developed their personality. Bharani Shivakumar, a student who has been practising yoga for the past few years, explained simple techniques.
The E.G.S. Pillay Arts and Science College, Nagapattinam, has bagged all the prizes in the oratorical and essay competitions for college students conducted by the Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL) in the town last week. In the Tamil oratorical contest, A. Mohamed Ismail, a second year student of M.Sc. (Biotechnology), stood first. Kankonar Mohanish Pradeep, Parab Rohan Mohan and Prabha Raghurai Uday (all first-year M.Sc. Biotechnology) emerged victorious. R. Manjula (III B.Com), A.Muthuraja (II B.Sc. Computer Science) and A. Mohamed Ismail (II M.Sc. Biotechnology) stood first, second and third in the Tamil essay writing competition. Similarly, Kankonar Mohanish Pradeep, Parab Rohan Mohan and Padma Sarabai won the first three prizes. The prizes were distributed at a function held at Panangudi last week.
More than 100 students of the A.V.C. College of Engineering, Mayiladuturai, and the E.G.S. Pillay College of Engineering, Nagapattinam, had an opportunity to learn more about patents, designs and copyrights, through a seminar on `Intellectual Property Rights and Copyright', organised by the A.V.C. College at Mayiladuturai last week. Annie Vijaya, Additional Superintendent of Police, Nagapattinam, inaugurated the seminar, sponsored by Anna University under the aegis of the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development. V.C. Ravichandran, Director, Technology Gateway, Anna University, explained the importance of intellectual property rights and copyright. Anna University, he said, was conducting seminars throughout the State.

Arun V. Parwate, Principal, AVC College of Engineering, stressed the importance of IPR and copyright in the context of globalisation. Madhusudan, Examiner (Patents and Designs), Union Ministry of Industry, conducted a technical session. While the first session covered the basics of IPR and copyright, designs, trademarks, geographical indications and the patenting system, the post-lunch session focussed on copyright and had a question-and-answer session. C. Senthilvel, secretary, AVC Educational Institutions, and V. Arunachalam, Member, Board of Management, spoke.
