BHOPAL, NOV. 10. Two voluntary organizations, Sadprayas and Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Udyog Sangathan (BGPMUS), have urged the political parties in the poll fray for the Bhopal Municipal Corporation elections as well as the independent candidates to seek votes on the basis of their stand on issues confronting the residents in the State capital. Addressing newspersons on behalf of Sadprayas and BGPMUS, Abdul Jabbar today drew attention towards the plight of thousands of those living close to the Union Carbide plant and said they were being forced to drink water contaminated by toxic chemicals that continue to lie scattered at the Carbide site since the 1984 gas disaster. He asked the candidates to spell out the plan for cleaning up the toxic waste. He also demanded a comprehensive plan for meeting the Capital's demand of 100 MGD of water. Right now only 60 MGD of water gets supplied in the city through the Kolar reservoir, Upper lake and other sources, he pointed out. Mr. Jabbar further asked the political parties and candidates to provide a blue print for ensuring clean drinking water supply. He pointed out that the problem is more acute as there were complaints that the water supply lines at several places in the city get linked with sewage. He said that 48 years after Bhopal became the capital of reorganised Madhya Pradesh, the houses in the old city lacked underground sever connections. It is also a matter of serious concern that nothing substantial had been done to keep the hilly slopes and other open spaces in the city as well as the catchment area adjoining the Upper lake free from encroachments and reckless construction. Mr. Jabbar demanded a comprehensive plan for public toilets and project for moving the local slaughter house outside city limits.
