A hasty decision?

Sir, — Uma Bharti's open defiance of the BJP leadership at the meeting of the party office-bearers, her storming out in protest against what she called the party's inability to stop "off-the-record briefings" by a select group of leaders, and her immediate removal from the primary membership do not augur well for the party. She, no doubt, was impetuous, but her suspension from the party within minutes of her outburst is not a well-considered action. Tempers should have been allowed to subside before taking such a drastic action.

Madhu Singh,
Ambala Cantonment, Haryana

Sir, — Ms. Bharti's conduct, in the presence of senior BJP leaders and the media, was unbecoming of a person who has held responsible positions in the party and government. A new manthan (churning) seems to be taking place in the largest Opposition party.

Col. (retd.) Ram Gulrajani,
Chennai
