Letters to the Editor
Sir, This refers to the report that the Government is going to appeal against the High Court order cancelling four top-level appointments in the Air Force (Nov. 10). Politicians are blissfully ignorant of military affairs and are guided by what the generals say. Instead of taking action to set right the anomalies in the promotion process and punish those who were instrumental in denying promotion to the aggrieved, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee is standing by the leadership of the IAF. Do not the two superseded Air Vice-Marshals deserve justice?
N. Kunju,
Sir, The Delhi High Court's action is a searing indictment of the IAF's style of governance in general and its promotion policy in particular. Excessive discretionary powers enjoyed by the officers of the promotion boards betray the undue importance given to their likes and dislikes. What about the harm done to the IAF because of the high position occupied all this while by those who were promoted (vis-à-vis those who may have been more deserving)?
S.C. Kapoor,
