WASHINGTON, NOV. 10. The U.S. Attorney-General, John Ashcroft, and the Commerce Secretary, Donald Evans, have resigned making them the first two Cabinet officials to leave the administration after the President, George Bush's re-election last week. More departures are expected over the next several weeks. Mr. Bush praised both men saying Mr. Ashcroft worked "tirelessly to help make our country safer" and Mr. Evans as "one of my most trusted friends and advisors." While Mr. Ashcroft's departure was talked about even before the November 2 election, many believed that Mr. Evans would move over to the White House to be the President's Chief of Staff. But Mr. Bush asked Andrew Card to stay. Mr. Ashcroft told Mr. Bush that the "objective of securing the safety of Americans from crime and terror has been achieved" and added that the Justice Department would be "well served by new leadership and fresh inspiration." He was one of the first appointees of Mr. Bush. Criticism
Mr. Ashcroft faced criticism on many things like the way he went about securing the country from terrorists to the implementation of the Patriot Act and the infringement on civil rights and liberties. Senator Richard Durbin said Mr. Bush "now has the opportunity to appoint a new Attorney-General who will protect not only our safety but our constitutional rights as well." Many names
Many names are being discussed as replacements for him including the former Number Two at the Justice Department, Larry Thompson. If Mr. Thompson gets the job, he will be the first African American to hold the post.
