Madras varsity keeps titles

KARAIKUDI, NOV. 10. Men and women teams of University of Madras retained the titles in the South Zone inter-university table tennis tournament conducted by Alagappa University at AUCPE indoor stadium here on Wednesday.

In the men's final, Madras beat NTR, Vijayawada 3-1 with State-ranked played A. Rajath Kamal playing a major role for Madras. Rajath Kamal defeated T.V. Ramakrishna 11-8, 11-7, 11-3 in the first singles but in the second, M. Sujithkumar lost to V. Chandrachud of NTR 6-11, 6-11, 5-11 and the score was level 1-1.

In the third, D. Samson again put Madras on the lead with a hard-earned win over Gautham Mukesh, after losing the first two games.

In the fourth also, Rajath Kamal, after losing the first game at 6-11, rallied to beat V. Chandrachud. Rajath Kamal took the second and third game easily but in the fourth, Chandrachud fought well till the score was 9-all. However, Rajath Kamal clinched the issue 12-10.

In the women's final, Madras beat VT, Belgaum 3-0 with junior international J. Swarna giving the lead for Madras by defeating Yashawani 11-2, 11-3, 7-11, 11-1.

Men (Final): Madras bt NTR, Vijayawada 3-1 (A. Rajath Kamal bt T.V. Ramakrishna 11-8, 11-7, 11-3; M. Sujith Kumar lost to V. Chandrachud 6-11, 6-11, 5-11; D. Samson bt L. Gautham Mukesh 11-6, 11-13, 11-4, 11-13, 11-6; A. Rajath Kamal bt V. Chandrachud 6-11, 11-8, 11-4, 12-10).

Third place play-off: VT, Balgaum bt Kerala 3-0.

Semifinals: Madras bt VTU, Belgaum 3-1 (A. Rajath Kamal bt Karthik M. Urs 11-6, 6-11, 12-10, 8-11, 13-11; M. Sujith Kumar lost to Uday S. Athreeya 6-11, 11-8, 5-11, 9-11; D. Samson bt C.K. Akhil Rangan 7-11, 6-11, 11-5, 11-5, 11-7; A. Rajath Kamal bt Uday S. Athreeya 11-9, 11-8, 11-7).

NTR bt Kerala 3-1 (T.V. Ramakrishna lost to C. J. Balaji 13-11, 9-11, 18-16, 9-11, 5-11; V. Chandrachud bt P. Adarsh 11-5, 11-9, 11-7; L. Gowtham Mukesh bt V. Vidhun 11-5, 11-7, 11-6; V. Chandrachud bt C. J. Balaji 11-9, 11-3, 5-11, 11-7).

Women (Final): Madras bt V.T. 3-0 (J. Swarna bt Yashawani 11-2, 11-3, 7-11, 11-1; M. Aparna bt B. M. Ashwini 11-7, 11-9, 8-11, 11-4; N. Aishwarya bt Ramya K. Ramesh 11-4, 6-11, 11-4, 11-7).

Third place play off: Kerala bt Mysore 3-0.

Semifinals: University of Madras bt Kerala 3-0 (M. Aparna bt M.S. Bindu 11-7, 11-8, 11-8; J. Swarna bt Aparna D. Nair 11-6, 11-9, 3-11, 11-4; N. Aishwarya bt V. Ashwathy 11-8, 10-12, 11-6, 11-3); VTU bt Mysore 3-0 (B.M. Aswini bt Y.P. Nandini 11-6, 11-4, 11-1; Ramyat Ramesh bt P. Manasa 11-2, 11-1, 11-7; Apoorva Prasad bt N.K. Sridevi 11-5, 11-2, 11-3.

However, all the above eight teams (four in men's and four in women's) have qualified for the All-India inter-zone inter-university tournament, which commences at the same venue here on November 12. — Our Correspondent
