Hospital targeted after patient's death

By Our Staff Reporter

KHAMMAM, NOV. 10. A super-speciality hospital in the town was attacked by an irate mob after the death of a patient on Wednesday. A wing of the hospital was ransacked and windowpanes of two ambulances were smashed. The police stepped in and brought the situation under control.

Trouble began when K. Rambabu, 27, a resident of Ramakrishnapuram, who admitted to the hospital two days ago, died in the early hours. He was the nephew of the playback singer and music director, Vandemataram Srinivasa Rao. He had worked as his assistant for some movies. He was given treatment in the hospital for bronchitis. His condition deteriorated on Tuesday evening. Though the patient and his attendant asked for the duty doctor, it was alleged that a registered medical practitioner was sent to attend on him. However, by the time he reached the bed, the patient had died.

Parents' charge

The victim's parents and some office-bearers of the CPI district committee alleged that the body was shifted to the intensive care unit giving them the impression that he was alive and treatment was on. The angry family members and supporters of the deceased then went on the rampage.

Senior doctors from different hospitals in the town reached the place and held talks with the hospital management. They tried to pacify the protesters who wanted the hospital to admit its lapses in writing. The hospital management, however, insisted on fixing responsibility on the protesters for the damage caused.
