Special trains to cope festival rush

NEW DELHI, NOV. 10. To meet the extra festival rush, Northern Railway is running 148 special trains to all major routes connecting Delhi with Eastern, Western and Southern parts of the country besides adding 300 extra coaches to popular trains to enhance passenger capacity for convenient travel. Northern Railway anticipates that over five lakh passengers would travel in these special trains and additional coaches.

According to the Northern Railway's General Manager, RR Jaruhar, strict instructions had been given to ensure a pleasant and punctual travel for passengers during the festival season. "We will be running a record 148 special trains to Patna, Muzaffarpur, Katihar, Mumbai, Secunderabad and Howrah. Nearly 300 extra coaches are also being attached to a number of popular trains to provide enhance passenger capacity for last minute passenger rush," he informed.

Northern Railway hopes that it would be able to serve more than 5 lakh passengers with these special trains and coaches. They were also examining wait lists of reserved tickets on-line to provide extra trains and coaches on heavily booked routes while special festive trains were also being announced daily, he added. Mr. Jaruhar has issued orders to ensure that there is no shortage of on-board amenities, and that the punctual running of these trains be specially monitored. Similarly, special control rooms for monitoring these aspects have already started functioning in Delhi, and at the divisional headquarters in Ferozepur, Ambala, Moradabad and Lucknow.

"The Railway Protection Force (RPF) in coordination with the Government Railway Police (GRP) have stepped up surveillance to ensure security in trains and at platforms. While major stations are under watch through close-circuit camera systems, special dog squads have been pressed into service for parcels and luggage areas. Companies of armed police have also been deployed," informed Mr. Jaruhar. Northern Railway has asked passengers to ensure that no inflammables are bought on board, and that any cause of suspicion is brought to the notice of thee Railway and security personnel.

Northern Railway has also made special arrangements at reservation counters besides ensuring wide dissemination of information regarding the extra services. "Though the special trains on offer have been filling up quickly, we are continuing with the introduction of extra services to cater to needs of the travelling public," Mr. Jaruhar added.
