LONDON, NOV. 12. Chelsea needed extra-time goals from substitutes Eidur Gudjohnsen and Arjen Robben to beat Newcastle 2-0 and reach the League Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday, while defending champion Middlesbrough was eliminated by Liverpool. At St. James' Park, Chelsea and Newcastle were tied 0-0 after regular time, thanks mainly to Blues goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini, who stopped a Laurent Robert free-kick just before the end of regulation. Gudjohnsen put the visitor ahead 10 minutes into extra time with a powerful strike which went in off Shay Given's right post, and Robben cemented the win 12 minutes later with an excellent individual strike. Also, Manchester United beat Crystal Palace 2-0, and Fulham needed extra time to beat Nottingham Forest 4-2. At Anfield, Neil Mellor scored twice for Liverpool, taking advantage of a rare first-team appearance. Middlesbrough missed a chance when Joseph Desire Job's shot hit the post just before Mellor scored the opening goal in the 83rd minute. Mellor's second goal was in the 89th. At Old Trafford, Louis Saha scored his first goal of the season and Kieran Richardson added the other. Saha was the only Manchester United player starting from the team that drew 0-0 with Manchester City on Sunday, with Quinton Fortune making only his second start this season after suffering from a calf injury and Tim Howard was back in goal. Palace also fielded a completely different side to the one that held Arsenal to a 1-1 draw on Saturday. Fulham needed an 86th-minute equaliser from Tomasz Radzinski to push its match against Forest into extra time. Marlon King had put Forest ahead in the 71st minute. Radzinski and Brian McBride scored to put Fulham up 3-1 in extra time, before Andy Reid pulled a goal back for Forest. Andy Cole sealed Fulham's win two minutes from the end. On Tuesday, Italian 17-year-old Arturo Lupoli scored two goals to lead a youth-oriented Arsenal over full-strength Everton 3-1. The results: League Cup: Chelsea 2 bt Newcastle 0; Manchester United 2 bt Crystal Palace 0; Fulham 4 bt Nottingham Forest 2; Liverpool 2 bt Middlesbrough 0; Arsenal 3 bt Everton 1; Burnley 0 lost to Tottenham 3; Cardiff 0 lost to Portsmouth 2; Watford 5 bt Southampton 2.
