BIDAR, NOV. 12. Farmers associations and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) held separate agitations in Bidar on Thursday demanding that sugar factories in the district pay a remunerative price for sugarcane. While members of the BSP demanded that sugar factories pay at least Rs. 1,200 a tonne, members of the Karnataka Krishik Samaj and other farmers' groups demanded that the Government ensure that factories pay at least Rs. 1,100 per tonne. The two cooperative sugar factories in the district paid Rs. 650 per tonne in the previous crushing season. The Bidar Sahakari Sakkare Karakhane has announced that it will offer Rs. 850 per tonne this year. The BSP members took out a procession and submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, T.K. Anil Kumar. They said that factories in Maharashtra paid Rs. 1,200 per tonne and those in Andhra Pradesh paid Rs. 1,010. The general secretary of the party's district unit, Baburao Kumbarwada; the president of the taluk unit, Kundan Kuppe, and other leaders including, Bharat Khandre, Wahid Lakhan, Shrikant More, and Baburao Beeri, led the strike. The members of KKS submitted a memorandum to the Government. The State committee member, Sidramaiah Swamy, asked farmers not to harvest sugarcane till the factories promised to pay at least Rs. 1,100 per tonne. The president of the district unit of the Janata Party, Mallikarjun Manageri; the president of the district unit of the Janata Dal (united), Kalyanrao Patil Nittur; the general secretary, Anil Kumar Beldar; and the director of Naranja Sahakari Sakkare Karakhane, Jagannath Patil Sangvi, led the agitation.
