Inland fish farming to be extended
By Our Staff Reporter
KANCHEEPURAM,
NOV.12.
The `kurumbarai' model of inland fish farming, taken up by womens' self-help groups at Kurumbarai village in Kancheepuram district, will be extended to 10 other public tanks, including Madurantakam, the Collector, R. Venkatesan said here.
It may be recalled that a self-help group in Kurumbarai village near Uthiramerur took the PWD tank in their hamlet on lease for three years to rear fish, despite opposition from the panchayat.
Though they did not get the expected income in the first year,it should be more profitable this year as the tank had now filled up.
Some one lakh fish fingerlings were introduced into the tank between September and December last year. The harvesting of fish began in April this year with local traders buying the fish and selling it in nearby towns such as Uthiramerur, Wallajabad and Kancheepuram.
Encouraged bythe success of the project, womens' SHGs in other places have asked the authorities to let them lease the tanks to rear fish.
Madurantakam tank
The district administration wanted to implement this scheme in major tanks such as Madurantakam by involving womens' SHGs in nearby villages. Mr. Venkatesan said that SHGs in 18 hamlets around Madurantakam tank had accepted the proposal.
The Madurantakam tank and 10 others will be leased to the Tamil Nadu Fish Farmers Development Agency, which in turn will lease it to the self-help groups.
