Implement anti-smoking order: judge
By Our Staff Reporter
MADURAI,
NOV. 12.
The Supreme Court judge, AR. Lakshmanan, has urged the State Governments to implement the order banning smoking in public places.
"The States should follow the judgment and implement it. Public places cannot be allowed to become unhealthy spots," he said releasing a Tamil health magazine, Maruthava Ulagam, here on Tuesday.
Mr. Lakshmanan said it was one of the important verdicts which concerned everyone. "Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan and Goa have drafted laws to that effect [banning smoking in public places.] But that has to be followed and other States also should implement the order." He said seven days of argument took place but the final verdict conveyed the message that people's health was the top priority.
He referred to the judgment stopping selling of "gutkha" based on a case filed by the Cancer Society in the Andhra Pradesh High Court.
