Cross-country car rally flagged off from Kanyakumari

By Our Staff Reporter

NAGERCOIL, NOV. 12. The Collector, Rajesh Lakhoni, flagged off a cross-country car rally, `Chalo! ASEAN', from Kanyakumari today.

The Collector said the rally would pass through nearly all States before arriving in Guwahati and approximately cover 14,000 km. The participants included entrepreneurs, journalists, senior IAS officers, industrialists and educationists. The rally is being organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry The Prime Minister is expected to take part in a daylong event in Guwahati on November 22, which would mark a new chapter in India's expanding ties with the ASEAN countries. Starting the rally from Guwahati emphasised the centrality of India's eastern region and in particular the northeastern States in consonance with the Government's `Look East' policy. The rally, in its maiden year, will be received mid-way in Vientiane, Laos PDR, on November 30, when, the Prime Minister will be joined by all Heads of State or Government of the ASEAN countries, in giving the ceremonial send off for its second leg. The Prime Minister is scheduled to be in Vientiane to participate in the third ASEAN Indian Summit.

Meant to be a non-competitive event, the rally is designed to draw the attention to the potential for socio-economic partnerships in the region, given the land connectivity of India with the ASEAN states and cultural bonds, said the Collector.
