TIRUNELVELI, NOV. 12. Mild drizzle continued in several parts of the district today, including the catchment areas of Manimuthar and Papanasam dams bringing inflow into the reservoirs. While water level at Papanasam touched 132.70 feet this evening, the level in the relatively small Servalar dam stood at 139.41 feet. Water level at Manimuthar dam touched 98.50 feet, thanks to an inflow of 3,290 cusecs. The PWD sources said water would be stored at Papanasam dam till it reaches 141 feet against the full capacity of 143 feet. "If there is any sudden downpour in the catchment areas, we'll be forced to open the dam immediately and hence people living near the watercourse have been advised well in advance to move to safer places," the sources added. The continuous drizzle in the southern part of the Western Ghats resulted in good flow into Thalayanai near Kalakkad, which feeds water to several tanks in and around this village on the foothills. As it began to rain heavily around 5 p.m. yesterday, the sidewalls at Thalayani was completely submerged.
Pisanam season
Farmers have started preparatory work for the pisanam season in almost all parts of the district as most of the irrigation tanks have sufficient quantity of water for the preliminary farming operations. Rain recorded in various parts of the district (in mm): Ambasamudhram - 40.0, Tirunelveli - 38.0, Palayamkottai - 35, Nanguneri - 18.0, Radhapuram and Sivagiri - 7.0, Sankarankovil - 4.0, Shencottai - 3.0, Tenkasi - 2 and Aayikudi - 1.60.
